Highest Online CD Rates

The best CD rates from green banks

Certificates of deposit are time deposits issued by banks. CDs have a fixed term and a fixed rate that does not change during the lifetime of the CD. If you invest in a CD you usually cannot withdraw your funds before the maturity date without paying an early withdrawal penalty. CD rates were as high as 6% only three years ago, but have fallen to near record lows since then. Today, the best CD rates are offered by online banks or the online division of major banks. Fortunately for eco-friendly banking customers, the same CDs that pay some of the highest rates – also leave a reduced carbon footprint. Less paper, less energy and less resources are expended setting up an online CD than a traditional bank CD from a bank branch. This does not necessarily mean the bank itself is socially-conscious, but setting up a CD online is still a great way to bank and green and earn higher CD rates.
